『SHERLOCK/シャーロック』パイロット版についても話すマーク・ゲイティス。インタビュー番組「Mark Lawson talks to Mark Gatiss」

2012.04.03にBBCで放送された、Mark Lawsonがホストを務めるインタビュー番組「Mark Lawson talks to…」のゲストに、『SHERLOCK/シャーロック』の共同プロデューサー兼脚本家兼マイクロフトでもある、マーク・ゲイティスがゲストとして出演しました。

『Doctor Who』について、子供時代について、などなどたっぷり1時間興味深い話が聴けます☆

その中で、『SHERLOCK/シャーロック』のパイロット版についてゲイティス氏が話す部分があり、その部分を海外ファンが早くもYoutubeにupしてくれているので、ご紹介。

M.L：Sherlock, it’s odd to think this now but it had a little stumble at the beginning, didn’t it, because the pilot episode was never transmitted although it is available on the box set, but I remember there were mutterings in corridors at the BBC, there was a panic about that series at the beginning.

M.G：The reason we eventually put it on the DVD was to stop that because it very good. The pilot is very good and we would have been very happy. It was originally commissioned a six hour-long episodes. And then when we made the pilot, they asked for three 90s. I think largely because of the success of Wallander in that format. But we knew we couldn’t just bolt on another half hour so Steve rewrote it, Steve Moffat rewrote it and we re-made it with a different director.

M.L：There were stories in the paper saying it was a disaster.

M.G：Exactly. That’s what I mean. You realise you have got absolutely no comeback, what do you do? It was literally because of an internal decision to make it in another format, this gossip gets out and I remember thinking, if we don’t show people that it’s not a disaster, this will live with us forever. And I mean, I suppose the argument is that you preserve the final version sacrosanct and maybe show people in 35 years’ time or something. But I personally thought that that was an insult, both to the original director and to the production because it is very good.

M.L：The second one is significantly more stylish though?

M.G：Yes, I think it is, but it is a different beast. What has happened to Sherlock has taken us all by surprise. We were very confident about it, but it is an amazing thing after three episodes to get this level of total fan ownership and expectation about the next lot. But also, the stories were tellin… they are epic. They are film-length stories and that is what you have to do.

M.L：And you are, which is where we started you’re very unusual in this, the extent to which you’ve been able to pursue your childhood enthusiasm in Sherlock, but also the Lucifer Box series of novels you’ve written, which again, history and horror, it’s all there.

今更ですが、『SHERLOCK/シャーロック』は、元々60分×6本の予定で、まずパイロット版「A Study in Pink」が作られました。それを観たBBCドラマ部門の上の人達が、「90分×3本でいけ！」と指令を飛ばし、急遽90分×3本に変更に…

ゲイティス氏は、同じ形－90分×3本-でヒットした「Wallander/刑事 ヴァランダー」を受けて上層部がその方向を指示したと考えているようですね。「Wallander/刑事 ヴァランダー」はケネス・ブラナー主演のBBCドラマで、原作はスウェーデン人作家ヘニング・マンケルの「クルト・ヴァランダー」シリーズです。(スウェーデンでもドラマ化されています)

60分が90分になったことで、現場は大パニック。脚本はもちろん書き直し、衣装やセットも変わり、監督も変更に。この辺りは、メイキング「Unlocking Sherlock」で、プロデューサーのSue Vertueが話しています。(日本版DVDにも入りますように)

￡800,000もの予算を費やしたパイロット版「A Study in Pink」はお蔵入りとなり、TV放送は一切ありませんでした。一部では、「デキが悪くて」お蔵入りになったんだ…という噂が飛び交っていたようです。

90分バージョンで、というのは内部決定であったものの、「デキが悪くてお蔵入りになったのではない」ことを見せられなければ、この噂は一生自分達についてまわるだろう、とゲイティス氏は考えたとのこと。結果は素晴らしいものになっていますが、「パイロットが出来が悪かったから」というのはパイロット版の監督およびプロダクションに対しての侮辱だと、ゲイティス氏は個人的には思ったそうで。

管理人は60分バージョンもかなり好きです（笑)　スタイリッシュさ、完成度は90分の方が高いと思いますが、60分には60分の魅力がｗｗ　アットホームさと、シャーロックの一般人度合いが60分の方は強く感じられます。

待望の『SHERLOCK/シャーロック』シリーズ1の日本版DVDは、2012.07.06にようやく発売予定。

とっくの昔にシリーズ2まで鑑賞済みのファンにはお値段的にもありがたみ極少ですが、BSで、しかもこの記事を書いている時点ではまだたった1回しか放送されておらず、再放送もないので、待っていた方には朗報かと思います。

シリーズ2を日本で観られる環境で！と待っているファンには、特殊環境なしで再生できるUS版BDが2012.05.22に発売です♪　US版BDは日本アマゾンでも取り扱われるはずなのですが、日本アマゾンにはまだ出ていませんね…(この記事を書いている時点で)
