It’s the year 1600, and young mathematician Johannes Kepler arrives at the Bohemia castle of legendary astronomer, Tycho Brahe, seeking refuge from religious persecution. Kepler discovers, to his astonishment, that Brahe has the most comprehensive set of measurements of planetary movements ever collated. But Brahe lacks the mathematical gift to decipher what his measurements might reveal about the solar system. The two forge a wary friendship - but will Brahe ever give Kepler full access to his measurements? And will the data allow Kepler to discover, as he puts it, "how God thinks"? Kepler (2.15pm, Radio 4) is a wonderful play, highlighting the combination of chance, petty jealousies and personal politics that led to one of science’s great discoveries. John Banville, who won the Guardian fiction prize for Kepler: A Novel, wrote the script, and the cast includes a show-stealing turn from Alun Armstrong as Brahe.
